With a similar color range to our low fire glazes, our mid fire glazes offer new and interesting tonal effects not found in low fire glazes when fired in a pottery kiln at cone 5 or cone 6. While it's normal for glaze contents to settle, all Penguin Pottery glazes need to be fully mixed before application to ensure smooth application. We recommend mixing for at least 1-2 minutes. It is vital to fire pottery glaze in a pottery kiln at the recommended temperature. Do not fire in a kitchen oven, as this can be hazardous. Your ceramic kiln must be temperature calibrated to confirm that it is firing at the appropriate temperature/cone. Ceramic glazes are classified according to a temperature range, including "low-fire," "mid-fire," and "high-fire." Over-firing can cause damage to the piece and kiln, while under-firing can lead to ugly results that look nothing like the swatch image. Glazes react differently and often look different depending on several factors, including the temperature they're fired at, the clay body on which they're applied, how fast the kiln reaches the target temperature, and the amount of oxygen in the kiln's atmosphere when firing.
